PARVO VIRUS INFECTION

Parvo virus infection manifests as enteritis and myocarditis with high morbidity rate that can go up to 100% and mortality up to 10%.

SUSCEPTIBLE HOSTS:

Parvo virus infection can affect dog, cat, cattle, pig, man, rat, mice, chicken, hamsters.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION:

Parvo virus infection can be transmitted through direct contact with the infected animal or its excretions. Virus is excreted in the excreta of the hosts. The virus can spread very quickly.

SYMPTOMS:

Parvo virus infection is manifested in 2 forms

1. Parvo virus enteritis.
2. Parvo virus myocarditis.

Parvo virus enteritis:

• Slight to high rise of temperature
• Gradually turn to subnormal level with vomiting and diarrhoea.
• Inappetence, refusal of food and apathetic in nature.
• Polydipsia, frothy yellow coloured vomitus, retching and restlessness.
• Brownish semi-solid faeces with mucus followed by foetid haemorrhagic diarrhoea.
• Leucopaenia
• Dehydration, exhaustion
• Death occurs due to dehydration leading to peripheral circulatory failure.

Parvo virus myocarditis:

• Pups under 10 weeks of age usually suffer from this form.
• Heart muscles are damaged and show signs of circulatory failure
• Respiratory problem and pulmonary oedema are not uncommon.
• Most animals die due cardiogenic shock.
• If they survive, they will suffer from chronic myocardial and circulatory complications.

HOMOEOPATHIC MANAGEMENT:

Ars alb: nausea, retching, vomiting after eating or drinking. Vomiting of blood, green mucus, or brown black mixed with blood. Small stools which is offensive, dark, with much prostration. Dysentery dark, bloody, very offensive.

Ipec: constant nausea and vomiting, vomits food, blood, mucus. Stools green, like frothy molasses. Dysenteric, slimy.

Nux vom: nausea in morning, after eating. Nausea and vomiting with much retching. Dysentery; stools relieve pains for a time.

Verat alb: vomits or eructates froth. Excessive vomiting with purging; violent retching. Nausea while eating. Watery, green, odourless or colourless stools. Visible palpitation with chorea. Pulse intermittent, feeble, slow, thready.

Phos: vomiting of blood, coffee grounds. Very fetid stools and flatus. Dysentery. Discharge of blood from rectum during stool. Heart weak. Violent palpitations. Pulse rapid, small, soft.
